Our Roses Knocked Out Fall

Our Roses Knocked Out Fall

Knock-Out Roses

Thanksgiving is a week away and my Knock-Out Roses are still doing their thing curbside in Kansas City. We and they have been enjoying the unseasonably warm weather this fall, but since tomorrow’s high will plummet into the 40s, I decided to enjoy my flowers while I could. I also cut several stems for inside so I can enjoy them a wee bit longer.

Apparently these brightly colored beauties are the one plant I can actually grow well. I get more compliments and jealous comments about my Knock-Outs than any other thing I’ve ever planted. The same held true for the rose bushes at our last house. I don’t do anything special, except plant in seriously full sun and keep mulch around the base. Other than a few good drinks in the middle of summer and a pruning each year (the deer help me out with that at this house), that’s about all the care I give these girls.

The fun thing about these roses is that my husband and I had to first clean out a bunch of yucca’s standing their ground in order to plant these bushes. I documented that struggle at Get the Yucca Out of My Yard and received great advice and commiserating at Hometalk.com. I’m proud to say that we did seem to be the victors (fingers crossed) and have been rewarded with a big gorgeous display of rosiness.

From Free to My Front Porch

From Free to My Front Porch

Here’s a quick little project I recently finished that cost me next to nothing, thanks to one of my favorite shopping spots — Mom’s house.

I went to Oklahoma a few weeks ago to help Mom with a garage sale she had been threatening to hold for quite some time, and lucky for me two old green chairs were still standing at the end. Instead of donating them to a local charity, she donated them to me. Oh. When I put it like that I feel a little guilty (but they do look super cute on my front porch).

I carted home these ugly green things in need of a little TLC and quickly got to work while the weather was still warm. My husband repaired a couple of slats, I gave them a good cleaning and after three cans of glossy black spray paint ($12), this pair of chairs is perfect on my front porch. Thanks Mom!

Mother and Son Autumn Swag

Mother and Son Autumn Swag

My son and I enjoyed yesterday’s wonderful fall afternoon walking in the woods, gathering leaves and creating a beautiful autumn swag with our bounty. This was just a little project I dreamed up that I knew my little guy would enjoy and it was a good excuse to tromp through the woods together on a beautiful day.

If you have a hole punch and a little patience, this is a perfect family craft project. We simply picked up lots of colorful, and some not so much, leaves throughout our walk and then used a hole punch to poke holes near the stem of each leaf (unless nature had already provided one), sorting them into small, medium and large leaf piles as we went. My six year old loved punching the holes!

After everything was punched and sorted, we started stringing. We simply loaded a long piece of baker’s twine with a variety of leaf colors and sizes and tied a bow at both ends. After I hung the sway, I evenly spread out the leaves until it was pleasing to the eye and you could see several different colors and leaf sizes. Of course the leaves will continue to dry out and lose lots of color over time, but that’s part of the charm. Also, this cute little swag is highly flammable, so maybe the fireplace isn’t the best place to hang such a thing.

I loved how this autumn swag turned out and had a great time making it with my son; unfortunately this is probably one of those one-event-only projects that will go in the trash before the forth coming Christmas décor explosion. Oh well, I guess we’ll just have to make another one next year.
