My Mailbox: The Struggle is Real

My Mailbox: The Struggle is Real

mailbox

Although I haven’t accomplished much around the house this past month, I did manage to decorate and hang our newest mailbox — that’s number four in five years. . . and not just because I just couldn’t make up my mind on what type of mail receiving receptacle would look best by the curb.

Box number one came with the house. It was old, ugly and rusty, but I’m beginning to see why it was left on its perch in such a sorry condition. We quickly replaced this sad little mess with a brand new post and cute oil-rubbed bronze box, complete with a shiny gold flag. I cut vinyl numbers similar to the ones pictured above and we were set. . . until winter.

After an untimely ice-induced collision with our neighbor’s truck, we replaced number two with another just like it. But before I could dress up box number three with letters and such, our rather broody mailman knocked that one clean into our neighbor’s driveway without so much as an acknowledgement or apology. Seriously?

After that incident, I refused to buy a new mailbox until I thought it was safe to spend another 30 bucks on something in which to stick the mail, so for almost two years our mail has been tossed into a severely dinted box bearing little decoration other than a hand-written last name in white grease pencil. (Surprising, how well that little pencil held up in the weather, but certainly not a permanent solution.)

Insert little anecdote here:  a friend just dropped by at the end of that last paragraph and she actually commented that I finally put numbers on my mailbox. See, they were long due. Plus, those big numbers are seriously hard to miss.

So anyway, here is mailbox number four (and hopefully final) in all its big-numbered grandeur. The box is actually oversized (because apparently our mailman is also far-sighted and can’t read the “Do Not Bend” labels on certain large envelopes) and so are the numbers. I also added the “No.” for a whimsical touch and used a heart instead of a period after the “o.” I think it’s pretty cute, not that my magazines, bills and occasional card care, but it certainly makes it easier to find our house. Now let’s just hope it makes it through the winter, the school bus, the trash pickup and mail delivery.

Hey, Where’s All My Free Time?

Hey, Where’s All My Free Time?

free time

Whew! Where did all my new found free time go? My child has been in kindergarten for almost a month and I have absolutely not accomplished a single thing on my “Hey Look at How Productive I Am Now” list.

I have not cleaned the storage room, I have not pared down my son’s toy collection, I have not worked out three times a week, I have not started my new kitchen back splash, I have not made yummy home cooked meals every night of the week (okay, so that was going to be a stretch anyway but you get my point) and I have certainly not blogged my little heart out as planned.

So as I went about wondering why I’m accomplishing less, it seems, around the house now that my only child is in school, I realized my new sought after role of “Wonder What I Can Accomplish Woman” has actually morphed into “My Son Will Succeed Super School Mom.”

No I haven’t shortened my to-do list, but I have, on the other hand, dropped off my son at school each morning, I have met him at the bus stop each afternoon, I have signed up for PTA and the school carnival tattoo booth (yes, I will be the one covering the local little ones in fabulous faux ink), I have already been through one round of school fundraising, I have figured out what “special” is on what day of the week so that I can dress my son accordingly (unless the schedule changes because it’s an early-release day, holiday or homecoming week or an assembly is planned), and I have happily navigated Jolly Phonics with my wee one on a nightly basis.

Now don’t get me wrong, I’m enjoying our new routine but there has been a bit of a learning curve. We’re still experimenting with departure times and school entry points that make the most sense. I make sure to read every e-mail, text and other alerts from the school, and I spend several minutes each afternoon rifling through my kindergartener’s backpack to see what needs to signed, purchased, reviewed or returned. Let me tell ya, there’s a lot going on at that school.

Our evening routine has also seen changes and between dinner, bathing and getting jolly with the phonics we find little time to do much else before bed. But when that precious boy’s head hits the pillow and his little prayers are said, his exhausted brain and body go from zero to sawing logs in nothing flat.

Although it’s not quite what I imagined, I’m enjoying this new season of life and with a little practice and polishing I might even be able to settle into my new schedule and squeeze in some structure. Huh, could it be that structure leads to free time? If I find it, I’ll let you know.

The Letter “B” as Cute Door Decor

The Letter “B” as Cute Door Decor

One of my nieces just moved into her new college apartment near the KU campus and she sent me a text out of the blue asking if I could make her a cute little something for her bedroom door. After discovering she wanted a letter B with peacock colors, I went in search of a few items to create her new door decor.

Since I didn’t really have much to go on, I decided to keep the project pretty simple and when I ran across this cute little picture frame in the wedding section of Hobby Lobby I thought it would be the perfect touch. My niece will be able to change the photo in and out on a whim, so the design is actually interactive — that is my favorite part. The frame was actually all bright gold, so I toned it down with a bit of dark wax. I also purchased that cute little teal feather thing that matched the teal tulle I already owned.

What you can’t see in the above photo is some teal burlap ribbon and pleated burlap ribbon that is wrapped around the leg of the letter. These ribbons served two purposes, to add some interest if seen from the side and to add some surface area on which to adhere the frame.  With the help of a little hot glue, everything came together quickly and snuggly.

It’s not the most elaborate decorative letter I’ve ever seen but since I was creating for someone else in a setting I had never seen, I thought conservative was the safe option. By adding the functioning photo frame my niece will be able to add her own touch to the door decor and even change it out with the seasons.
