Saturday Sparks – French Country Kitchens

Saturday Sparks – French Country Kitchens

Saturday’s are just those days that I find hard to pull myself away from family, garden and house duties long enough to get my witty on and write a post that most of you might be interested in reading. So I’ve decided to pull together some of my favorite ideas and inspirations, compile them into a themed post and present them to you in hopes it might spark a bit of creativity in the home and garden projects of your own.

Today is French country kitchens day. I love French country and I love kitchen design, so these are some of my favorites.  I do believe just about anyone can transform their kitchen into a French country themed retreat, but you have to be willing to go all the way. An Eiffel Tower and toile tea towel does not French country make, but if you pull out the stops you can have a great finished product.

Some of these inspiration photos feel formal while others are very much more country, but that’s the beauty of French country decorating — just because “country” is in the name doesn’t mean it is only meant for Cape Cods and cottages.

If you have a French country kitchen in your home, please send me a picture. I would love to see it.

Just How Safe is Your Home?

Just How Safe is Your Home?

CHlogoCharlie’s House is a not-for-profit organization helping parents, grandparents and caregivers make a home as safe and injury-free as possible for children. Born from a tragic accident and loss of a child, Charlie’s House is dedicated to keeping people informed and engaged when it comes to preventing injuries to children in and around the home.

The Charlie’s House website provides great home safety information for caregivers and you can even print off a checklist for your own home. I am happy to say my husband and I have screwed, bolted and secured our large furniture to the walls of our home in hopes of preventing harm to our son, but after reading through the checklist, I discovered hidden dangers that had completely slipped my mind.

This site is definitely worth a visit, and you should at least look through the safety checklist to see if your home has any hidden dangers. Any life spared is worth the read.

Whip Up a Batch of Baking Powder

Whip Up a Batch of Baking Powder

Baking powder from scratch? And here I always thought baking powder was “the” scratch. I never knew you could make your own, but it’s certainly good to have this recipe on hand in a pinch.  This post is courtesy of my new friend, Lori, at A Bright and Beautiful Life. You can find all kinds of deliciousness on her blog, so it’s definitely worth a visit.

You may ask, “why make your own baking powder?”  I would have asked the same question before I realized that most baking powder has aluminum added to it.  {So that’s why some baked goods taste a little bit metalic.}  The human body is able to excrete aluminum in it’s natural form but aluminum, like mercury, as an additive is toxic to the body, specifically the brain.  It’s hard to avoid all aluminum, but this is a small thing I can do to help keep it out of my body and those of my family.  It is possible to purchase aluminum-free baking powder, but it’s a lot less expensive to make it.

Homemade Baking Powder clumps together so some people add cornstarch to the mixture.  I personally don’t add it ~ I just break up the clumps with a fork.

Baking Powder is super easy and inexpensive to make, and using homemade cuts out the toxic aluminum so baked foods taste better and our bodies will be healthier.

Why not make some today?
