If a Tree Falls in the Woods. . .

If a Tree Falls in the Woods. . .

I spent the better part of this very rainy morning having coffee talk with some good friends, which was a wonderful, relaxing way to start the day. The afternoon? Well, that proved a bit more exciting. . .

Shortly after lunch I heard a loud snapping sound from outside and by the time I got to a window the carnage was already in motion. The bad news was that a rather large tree from “The Wood” was uprooted and lodged in another slightly smaller tree, which also now was mangled beyond saving. The fortunate news was that the large tree at least had the good graces to fall in the opposite direction of the chicken pen. *whew*

I pulled on my rain jacket and rubber boots to inspect the damage, but I was careful not to venture too close for fear of just how and when this mangled mass of branches and tree trunks would continue its decent. Ever so often a bracing branch would snap and a smaller limb would fall to the ground, raining green leaves in its wake, but the largest mass of broken, sad trees didn’t seem to budge. I finally took my soggy self back inside and went about my business while wondering how we would ever get those trees pulled down, cut up and carted off.

A couple of hours later, a loud snap again broke the silence and I ran to the window just in time to see the final bow of one of our big beauties. While it made me very sad to see one of our large trees lifeless in the dirt, I was grateful it didn’t obliterate the chicken pen, the chicken coop and all the hens to boot. I don’t think the girls realized just how precarious their situation could have been, but the whole event did apparently scare the bejeezus out them. After the final fall, all of our hens huddled in the far corner of their pen and rang out loudly their complete distaste for what they had just witnessed. It was the most awful bunch of squawking I had ever heard and while I didn’t blame them one bit, their crazy cries did at least make me smile.

Just How Grown Up is a Second Grader?

Just How Grown Up is a Second Grader?

Yesterday evening was “meet your teacher night” at my son’s school and today is our last official day of summer. Wow! I have absolutely no idea where it all went. Okay, so I have a few suspicions, but I probably won’t own up to the fact that I tried to cram way too much good stuff into a mere two and a half months (and I might do the same thing next year *grin*).

As usual, my son was a bit anxious about the school year but after he located his classroom, met his teacher and recognized a few peers he is now a bit more eager to get second grade started. Of course I would be happy if he was simply working his way backward and the first day of preschool was actually at hand. My sweet little boy is growing up so quickly and although I try to enjoy every new season of life, I’m not ready to cut the apron strings as soon as he might like.

Monday evening I asked him if he wanted me to walk him to his classroom on the first day of school. This has been the drill for the last two years and I thought it was simply a rhetorical question. Wrong!

“That’s so embarrassing,” he said.

I responded, “Really?”

*short silent pause*

“But you can walk me if you really want to,” he added.

That’s my boy! He is so on the fence when it comes to growing up, and if that is all I can get I’ll take it. I’ll let him make every justification in the book as long as it keeps him from morphing into a teenager at lightning speed. Yes, I want to walk him to class on the first day of school, and I bet I do it for as long as he lets me.

New Card Challenge Creation, Times Three

New Card Challenge Creation, Times Three

card challengeI recently stumbled upon a new blog based out of Australia called Scrap the Boys, and this month I decided to play along with their latest card challenge. There is a prize up for grabs, but since I am an international player I am hoping for a guest design spot instead.

When I saw the card sketch, I immediately thought of clouds and sunshine (do not ask me why), so I quickly turned to Echo Park’s “I Love Sunshine” kit, which I recently purchased at Tuesday Morning. By the way, if you are looking for some really affordable scrapbooking supplies you should visit your local T.M. store if you are lucky enough to live near one. I actually have two within a few miles of my home. Yay!

I created this card using papers from the “I Love Sunshine” collection, but I also added accents from my solid paper stash. The plaid clouds came from a different 6×6 collection, but I just couldn’t resist the contrast they provided against all the other happy colors. I also inked my edges and added a bit of bling to finish off this fun card that says “Hello” on the outside and “Sunshine” on the inside.

I really liked the way this first card turned out, but when I reread the challenge I noticed that it also was supposed to be a celebration themed card. Oops! So I decided to make another one. Yay!

The second card also was created with the “I Love Sunshine” collection and a light blue background from my solid stash. This one has a similar feel to the first card, but it also fits the “celebration” requirement. Yay again!

So by now I’m having so much fun with this sketch that I decided to create yet one more card using the same paper collection and same style as the first two. I got a bit crafty with my pinwheels but finished it off with the similar inked edges and bling. I’m not sure which creation is my favorite, but just like that I beefed up my go-to greetings with one simple card challenge.
