Treasure Hunting at the Wide Spot in the Road

Treasure Hunting at the Wide Spot in the Road

getawaypopcapI’m counting down the days until my annual trek to Sparks, Kansas (literally a wide spot in the road), for the latest installment of their fall antique and flea market. If you have been a reader for a while, you know what a fan I am of this shindig, and I’ve been attending for years now.

The huge trash and treasure sale is being held September 3-6 this year along K-7 and 240th Road. Just head north from Hwy 36 and you can’t miss it. Sadly, my sister won’t be tagging along for this venture, but I’ve arranged a sleepover at grandma’s for my little one and I’ll still be hitting the road just past the crack of dawn. (Come to think of it, I’m so glad my name’s not Dawn.)  Booths open between 7:00 and 8:00 am and close by 6:00 pm.

I think the best parking is in the back, as long as it’s not raining — if it’s sloshy and you’re not driving a 4×4, you might think about parking elsewhere. Of course, it looks like the weather beings are calling for hot and humid temps, so you might want to think about Dawn’s crack as well. If you arrive early there are a couple of spots that serve breakfast, and tons of places to grab lunch or snacks throughout the day.

I’ll be wearing my Small Talk Mama shirt, so if you see me, be sure to say, “Hey!”

Cute and Cuddly Nod to Fall

Cute and Cuddly Nod to Fall

It has been a great long while since I actually got to sit down and be a bit creative, but yesterday afternoon I finally holed away in my craft room while my little guy slept and came up with a cute little card for Cards in Envy’s latest challenge.

This challenge was all about cute and cuddly, so I pulled out my Create a Critter Cricut Cartridge (that’s a mouthful) and picked out this adorable little squirrel to adorn my card. All the patterned papers came from the American Crafts Autumn Crisp paper pack, which definitely gave the card a nod to fall.

In addition to the multi-layered Cricut image, I also used several other tools while making this card. I embossed the background with my Sizzix machine and then lightly sanded the circles to make them pop. I also added some edge inking, Glimmer Mist, twine and stamping to create the finished product. While the end result has basic lines, I think all the details bring it together into a cute cohesive card.

It is a gorgeous late summer morning here in the Midwest, so my son and I decided to trek down to the local farmer’s market to see what was fresh. I’ve been craving vine-ripened tomatoes all summer, because our crop (and those of everyone else I know) just didn’t produce this year. Our spring and early summer were so wet that I gave up on our garden pretty early and let the weeds do their thing.

I picked out some sweet banana peppers and juicy red tomatoes, while my son chose fresh broccoli and a tasty bundle of carrots. I don’t think he has ever seen carrots right out of the ground, complete with the tendrils and tops attached. Add our own homegrown new potatoes, and I can hardly wait for lunch.
