The Calm That Comes Between October and December

The Calm That Comes Between October and December

the calm that comes between October and December

What a crazy fall it has been! Hmm, that sounds familiar, because I believe I echo that same sentiment every year about this time. We ramp up around here in October for our son’s birthday and then barrel on through Halloween and into Thanksgiving before decking the halls for Christmas. If we add the end of daylight savings into the mix with all the seriously gray days here in the Midwest, it makes a mama feel like she is wading through really thick mud! Thankfully we woke up to the glorious, long absent sun shining on us today, which helps me tolerate the wind that blew in with it.

So with all the endless putting up and taking down of decorations that accompany our autumns at the Three Acre Wood, I have decided to claim my new favorite holiday as Thanksgiving. Now don’t get me wrong, I do love to decorate for Halloween, dress up our child and hit the houses for tricks or treats and I also love the hustle and bustle of Christmas with all its holly, lights and gift giving; but I have begun to seriously appreciate the calm that comes between October and December.

Thanksgiving is just one of those holidays that is a good return on investment. You get to visit family, eat loads of delicious food and maybe even take in a movie, do a bit of shopping or play a friendly football game in the cow pasture (okay, so not everyone has a cow pasture for playing, but any old yard or park will do). There are no presents to purchase and no packages to wrap; just bring a dish or two (yes, I’ll be making Nannie’s pecan pie), wear something with elastic, show up with a smile and plan to stay awhile. There’s no need to make multiple trips to the attic ahead of time, because decorations are minimal with a few hand turkeys here and some multi-colored leaves there. You might even get to eat on the fancy dishes and actually use that gravy boat that has been gathering dust since this time last year.

You just can’t beat a turkey coloring tablecloth and a huge jar of olives!

There’s always something for the kids (and grownups) to enjoy, like this turkey craft kit.

One never knows when the aunts might show up sporting all their craziness!

Thanksgiving, by design, is meant to give us a day to pause and reflect on all our blessings, to give thanks for our family and friends and for all that gives our lives some meaning. It is a time for remembrance and appreciation and a time for laughter and warmth. For me, Thanksgiving is the calm that comes between October and December and the restoration that comes before the scurry and hurry of the grand daddy of all holidays. It is a day to refocus on what really matters and a day to appreciate everyone in our lives.

So to all my family and friends, I thank the Lord for your presence in my life. I am truly blessed!

Did you happen to notice all that fun Halloween candy that filled my festive buckets in yesterday’s post? Well guess what? All that yummy stuff arrived courtesy of Oriental Trading and there is plenty more where that came from. Oriental Trading has some of the cutest and most affordable Halloween treats you can find and much of it is actually on sale right now.  So today I thought I would show you just a few of my favorite treats available online.

green saltwater taffy

This green sour apple-flavored saltwater taffy is delicious! So good in fact, that I was afraid my stash would be gobbled up way before my photo shoot. If you like taffy this is a great choice, but there are also lots of other flavor and color options available.

These hard candy Halloween sticks are just about as festive as a candy can get and I love the variety of colors and patterns. Right now you can get 80 sticks for less than $10. Wow! Now that’s a deal.

Transformed Buckets are Halloween Hit

Halloween buckets

ReviewDisclaimerNew

I hope everyone is in the Halloween “spirit” these days, but if you need a little extra inspiration these holidays buckets might just do the trick. I received a set of six medium galvanized pots from Oriental Trading and transformed them into black and orange Halloween buckets with a bit of spray paint, sticky vinyl, chalkboard coating and washi tape.

The first set of buckets was simple to make using candy corn as my inspiration. I simply spray painted one white, one orange and one yellow and plopped them down in a row. The hardest thing about this project was getting the weather to cooperate with my painting schedule. You can fill these pots with candy, chips or other goodies to transfer a party table into something festive.

This next bucket was a combination of spray paint and vinyl. I simply sprayed the pot orange and after it dried I randomly adhered black vinyl polka dots for a fun and festive look. I cut the dots with my Circuit machine, but I’m sure you can find round stickers at various crafting stores around town.

This chalkboard bucket is one of my favorites, because it can change with your mood or even the seasons. I sprayed the bucket with flat black paint and after it dried I applied two coats of the same chalkboard medium I used on my pumpkin countdown calendar. After everything cured overnight, I was able to write a message on the pot using chalk. I don’t know about you, but I think it’s “Boo-tiful.”

This last bucket has a different look than the others, but it was fun to use some of my Halloween washi tape that seems to go on and on forever. I started by spraying the pot white and after it dried I started applying tape. Since the bucket is wider at the top than the bottom, I had to be careful with my spacing and make sure the strips of tape stayed vertical. After a few strips, I quickly got the hang of it.

I just love my new festive buckets and think they will be a Halloween hit! If you are interested in making your own pots, visit Oriental Trading to place an order or visit their Halloween Headquarters and craft page for loads of other great inspiration.
