Florida Vacation Full of Family Firsts

Florida Vacation Full of Family Firsts

We returned from our Florida family vacation last week; and while it’s so good to be home, I feel like I’ve been playing catch-up for the last several days. I sure do love to travel, but I always love to come home. I think it makes me appreciate what I have. . . and home is a good thing to have.

My in-laws rented a house for the whole family smack dab in the middle of the state and we descended on the hapless retirement community in true crazy family fashion. We arrived in shifts with several days of overlap, so we had some good time together, but never quite toppled into the typical family bickering and complaining stage (and, yes, most of you know exactly what I’m saying).

This year’s trip was full of firsts, so I thought I would share a few fun photos with you. What began as our son’s first airplane flight immediately became our son’s first three-hour airport delay, as we waited and waited for our plane to arrive. We made the most of it with dinner, plane watching and puzzles (I am so glad I packed several kid-friendly time fillers), but it was barely light enough to see the earth fall away when we finally took off after 9:00pm. Our son didn’t care, he was all in for this trip.

One of our first stops (when we actually made it to Florida) was Sea World — another first for our son, and one for my husband too.  We arrived early and spent an entire day visiting most of the rides, shows and attractions. We chose Sea World for several reasons:  1) we enjoy the animal interaction, 2) I don’t do Disney in the middle of the summer when the sun is hot and the lines are long (or visa versa), and 3) although I’m glad the Orca’s will be gaining their improved living conditions in the next few years,  I wanted my son to see their awesome show before they retired.

Another first for our little guy was the ocean. He had never been to the coast, waded into the Atlantic or built castles in the sand. Check, check and check. We drove to Daytona one overcast day and had a fabulous time at a not-so-crowded beach along a stretch of super-fine white sand. It was a day of firsts for all of us. We had never been to “the world’s most famous beach,” and I had certainly never driven  a car onto the sand as you are allowed to do. I kept thinking I would sink our little rented Ford Focus up to its axles, but I managed to keep moving through the thick sand and out the other side. Wish I could say the same for those other folks in that mini van.

The wildlife state park at Homosassa Springs was a fun little day trip for my son and a couple of nieces. We drove over one afternoon to see the alligators, manatees and other rescued animals at this fun little attraction. You can park in town and take a tram or boat ride to the actual park, and we finally got to spy a wild gator in the water as we boated back at the end of the day.

Of course we also threw in some golfing, swimming and other activities during the trip. We even found time to “find Dory” along the way. We wrapped up our Florida vacation with a daylight airplane ride, complete with our son’s first connecting flight, which suited him just fine.

Backyard Water Slide is “Young” Family Fun

Backyard Water Slide is “Young” Family Fun

I’ve heard that children keep you young. . . and now I have proof. Yesterday was, as my son calls it, “slippy slide” day, and there was no way forty-something Mom and fifty-something Dad were going to miss out on the fun.

This particular slide was a preschool graduation gift from Mimi last month and the weather this week finally called for a bit of heat-beating fun. Of course my backyard water sliding novice of a husband tried to install our little toy according to the manufacturer’s instructions, which left the ride as flat as the spot he picked in the yard. We live on a hill, for goodness sakes! After I took over the installation, complete with an extra safety tarp, the real fun began.

We each took our turns on the water slide and found it great fun; but I won’t lie, I did hit the Advil first thing this morning. . . but it was so worth it! One of the best parts was that my husband finally fessed up that as a boy he tried a slippy slide once (only once) and gave up when it didn’t work very well. I love that he finally got to enjoy this simple form of summer fun with his family.

Rocking My Mama-Made World

Mam-Made World
All Grown Up! My son’s last day of preschool

Today I dropped off my son for his last day of preschool (and I thought the first day was tough). A quick hug, watering eyes, speedy exit and several tissues later, I finally admitted my comfortable little mama-made world was about to be rocked.

As much as I want to dig my heels into this season of life, only summer separates my son from school; which means the last five glorious, fun-filled, stay-at-home-mom years will quickly become a thing of the past. I made it through Kindergarten Roundup (though I declared it “the beginning of the end”), I made it through the paperwork, and I even made it through the screening, but today I just couldn’t hold it together. . . and yes, I’ve sufficiently soaked, dabbed and blown my way through several Kleenex just writing this little post.

The years between birth and boyhood went by so swiftly. We’re talking Lightning McQueen ka chow quick! I tried my darndest to enjoy the big and little moments, the sadness and the laughter and the sick and silly days, but I still want more. I want to rock my son (all 43 pounds and 43 inches of him) to sleep at night. I want to sing more “pretty songs” before bed. I want to read more silly stories and I want to giggle until our sides are sore.  So many people told me it would be a blur, and they were right. But as for this family, I seriously believe we pulled a few Gs on our way to where we are now.

I know each day holds new adventures and the future promises loads of fun, but when you have been blessed with a sensational son, a supportive family and fabulous friends, it’s hard to believe that “Phase Two” will somehow live up to this mom’s thus far amazing life. So tonight I’ll sneak one last kiss from my sleeping child’s cheek and whisper “I love you” in his ear. I think that will be enough; yes, I know that it is plenty.
