Getting the Garden Going

Getting the Garden Going

seeds

I finally found a break in the rain and my schedule to get the garden going yesterday. My husband has handed over the veggies to me this year, but he was kind enough to rototill and prep the ground for me before the rains came pouring in during the last couple of weeks. So when the sun popped out yesterday, I donned my rubber boots, grabbed the hoe and put a few seeds in the ground.

So here is what’s planted thus far. Radishes, green onions, lettuce and spinach. We did get potatoes and large onions in before St. Patrick’s Day, but they are in large pots instead of the garden. I also have green bean and cilantro seeds ready to be planted; and Sutherlands had a vegetable sale this morning, so I managed to get up a bit early and grab a few tomatoes, peppers and strawberries to round out the early spring plantings.

My “Hello Spring” Mantel

So here’s my latest mantel configuration, just in time for Spring. Of course there are a few touches of Easter like the bunny banner hanging in front and the chick picture on the right that lend a super springy feel to the whole thing. My husband isn’t crazy about the bluish-gray frame without a picture and said it looks like we’re having a garage sale; but I just ignored his comments, because it pulls in some accent color. . . and well, I just kind of like it.

I picked up that metal bucket for cheap at Hobby Lobby the other day and found a beautiful bluish-green type of fern that fits perfectly. I love the color and shape of the leaves, but it’s so cool that it almost looks fake. In fact, the hubs was surprised to find me watering it yesterday.

I love, love, love that metal cagey planter thing that I picked up for $10 at a local antique shop a few weeks ago. Paired with a candle, a couple of sets of books and a big metal “S” (for our last name or Small Talk Mama, if you will) and it makes for a nice, yet simple vignette.

From Blustery to Brrrrr

From Blustery to Brrrrr

ColdRose

Like so much of the Midwest, we went from beautiful (but windy) warm yesterday to the deep freeze this morning. The warning of the chill had been out for a week, but we were still running around like there was a hurricane a comin’ yesterday afternoon and evening watering the grass one last time, winterizing the hoses and faucets, mending mailboxes (which had been hit for the third time in two years), snipping the remaining flowers still blooming outside and bringing in the geraniums that still had lots of life to bear.

Groceries? Eh, who wants to take their four-year old grocery shopping when we could be outside enjoying the very last bits of a blustery fall day. . . which means that becomes my chore while my son is in preschool. Maybe I’ll just strap the frozen goods to the top of the Jeep and run all kinds of errands without fear of a thaw.
