My Weight Loss, Week One

My Weight Loss, Week One

WeightLossWeek1

Well now, isn’t this embarrassing. I only lost a measly half a pound in week one of my weight loss journey, and now I have to tell the world. So let’s see where it all went wrong. . .

First Mistake: my mindset. I figured if I only stopped eating crazy and making merry I would surely lose a pound or two. I ate so horribly for the last month and a half that I thought “better” would make a dent in my excess poundage. Wrong.

Second Mistake:  one carefree night. I figured one night of indulgence out with my boys wouldn’t do that much damage. After all, I ordered water to drink. Wrong.

Third Mistake: not counting. I have discovered the best way for me to loss weight is simple math — calories in and calories out. Of course in order for this to work, I need to know how many calories I eat. I have successfully used Calorie Count dot com for this purpose in the past and really like the online program. I have many of my favorite foods plugged in already and can easily track my progress through the days, months and years. The catch to this whole thing is that you gotta use it. I didn’t. I just guestimated and kept a semi-running total in my head instead of plugging it in. Wrong.

Fourth Mistake: excercise,  or the lack of it. I made my way to the gym only once last week. Okay, so my son was sick and it was quilting weekend, and the Chiefs were in the playoffs, and I had to buy groceries. . . The list can go on and on, but the fact remains — I didn’t make time to excercise. I’ve found that with a family to raise, mouths to feed and every other interesting thing I have going, I have to make a deliberate effort to schedule time to workout. Never mind that we own a treadmill, free weights and Wii Fit, or that we live in a neighborhood with nice sidewalks and a beautiful trail in our backyard. So with 168 hours of life to work with last week, I used just under one to reach my fitness goals. Sadly, wrong.

Okay, I believe in learning from my mistakes and so I’m hoping planning for a better week two. I plan to change my mindset and be active in my weight loss goals, I promise not to “reward” myself with a little indulgence if I haven’t actually achieved anything, I will actively use the tools at my disposal; and lastly, I will work up a sweat.

Of course I’m curious. What weight loss and fitness tools do you use to help meet your goals? I would love to read your comments and suggestions below.

“The Weight is Over” — My 2016 Weight Loss Goal

“The Weight is Over” — My 2016 Weight Loss Goal

WeightIsOverSo here we are, almost a week into the new year, and I’m staring my weight loss goals squarely in the face. . . again. Of course, it’s the new year — a time of resolutions, promises, goal setting and thoughts of a better future — so who isn’t into making a few changes.

According to ABC News, weight loss is one of the most popular new year’s resolutions for 2016 (and every other year), which makes sense because most of us start eating about Thanksgiving and don’t stop until New Year’s Day. If you’re me, you throw in a couple of birthdays, several Christmas parties and baking for the neighbors and it’s a real recipe for packing on the pounds — about eight of them to be specific. Yes, I gained eight pounds in a month and a half, and it will probably take me twice that time to work them off.

So here we are, again, at one of my favorite lifestyle segments, The Weight is Over. While I love this catchy little phrase, I did notice that it is also the new tagline for the soon to be released movie, Kung Fu Panda 3. Make of that what you will, but I’m refusing to acknowledge any links between myself and a huge, overweight panda that enjoys eating, a lot. I’m just sayin’. . .

Okay, Panda references aside, here’s how this will hopefully work. My goal is to lose a total of 25 pounds by December 31 of this year. That’s the next New Year’s Eve and almost a year away. This should put me at a healthy yet manageable weight for my body type and height, which also happens to be my weight before I married my husband almost 13 years ago. Each week I will post my progress right here at Small Talk Mama along with a few insights, struggles and maybe even a new good recipe or two. I would love for you to follow my journey and keep me accountable throughout the year, because I’ve tried this in the past and do pretty well until I get busy and stop publishing my results. Unfortunately, it’s just too easy to back slide when no one is watching. Your suggestions and encouraging comments will be greatly appreciated along the way, and if you don’t see a “Weight is Over” post for a few weeks please feel free to call me out on it.

So here’s to my weight loss journey. May it be swift, manageable, life changing and ultimately long-lasting.

This Tortoise Lives with a Hare

This Tortoise Lives with a Hare

Weight5weeks

So most of you probably know the old story of The Tortoise and the Hare, where the tortoise wins a race by keeping his pace slow and steady while the hare is out having a good time, taking naps and visiting with friends. This means the tortoise probably packed his lunch of celery, water and flax seed for the road and never stopped to indulge on “brunch with the girls” or “mom’s night out.” Now I ask you, what seems like more fun? After all, didn’t the hare still finished the race even if he wasn’t first. I’m sure I would be okay with that.

Okay, so I realize that the brunches and treats are probably what signed me up for this “race” to begin with, but short of surgery and magic pills, I wish there was an easier or more exciting way to quickly lose lots of weight. I’ve often heard weight loss compared to the little lesson-toting work of fiction mentioned above, but it doesn’t make it any easier when you happen to be living with a hare. My husband has been dieting for just over a week and has lost 10 pounds. Seriously?? Men lipo-suck!
